The Turkish Ambassador to The Gambia, His Excellency Fahri Türker Oba, on Monday paid a historic visit to the Media Academy for Journalism and Communication (MAJaC), describing the students as “bright people with bright energy” and commending the academy for its growing impact in media training.

Upon arrival, Ambassador Oba was received by Sang Mendy, Managing Director of MAJaC, who welcomed the visit and underscored its significance for the institution’s international outlook. Mendy called on other diplomatic missions and international organisations to collaborate with MAJaC in strengthening journalism and communication training in the country.

“Hosting the ambassador in such a time reflects the growing international confidence in MAJaC. We look forward to transforming these conversations into long-term collaborations that benefit our students and the wider media sector,” he said.

James Badjie, Director of Training at MAJaC, expressed appreciation to the Ambassador for honouring the students’ invitation, noting that it was the first time a diplomat visited the academy at the request of students. He thanked the students for their initiative and highlighted that the discussions held would contribute meaningfully to MAJaC’s future growth.

“We touched on key issues that will help MAJaC reach greater heights. The ambassador acknowledged our efforts and called for mutual understanding for mutual benefit,” Badjie added.

Ambassador Oba, speaking after a tour of the academy’s studios and campus facilities, praised the vibrant atmosphere at MAJaC and emphasized the importance of women’s participation in the media.

“The first thing I noticed was bright people with bright energy, especially the number of young women. That is very important for the development of the country. I received a warm welcome, and I thank the administration and the MD,” he said.

Crucial to the visit was featuring in a special radio interview conducted by Advanced Diploma student Awa Bobb and her group from the Advanced Radio Production class. The discussion explored The Gambia–Turkey relationship and potential areas of collaboration between the Turkish Embassy and MAJaC in promoting media development.

The ambassador’s visit, the first of its kind, marks a significant milestone for MAJaC as it deepens its international partnerships and strengthens its commitment to digital-era journalism and media excellence.
