Media Academy for Journalism and Communication (MAJaC) is a not-for-profit limited liability Company, established in 2010 by the Gambia Press Union (GPU) to strengthen democracy through broad-based and high-quality professional training for media and communication specialists. It aims to build and nurture critical minds for the rapidly evolving world of journalism and communication.

Our journalism programme is aligned to the UNESCO standards for journalism education in Africa and it is accredited by the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority-NAQAA. Our teaching approach is learner-centered hinged on media ethics, analysis, critical thinking and research. Due to the hands-on training approach, the academy is lauded as “a revolution” in journalism education in The Gambia.

In general, MAJaC encourages research, critical thinking and analysis and above all ethics, while we expose our students to the principles of media, democracy, and good governance. This is what positioned MAJaC as a model for journalism education in the country.

We have produced award-winning journalists, editors, journalism tutors while some of our graduates work in media development. Annually, products of MAJaC scoop awards in the GPU Journalism Excellence Awards.

MAJaC is synonymous to journalism education. However, we recently introduced Film and Photography and Communication to cater for the ever-growing demands of the creative industry and communication.

MAJaC also offers short, specialized and tailor-made courses in journalism, communication, digital media etc
